A major pharmaceutical company tasked Mother Tongue with creating local language marketing materials to promote their newly developed myelofibrosis drug in 10 European markets. 

Working in close partnership with the client, we assisted throughout the project lifecycle — from initial research of local references to substantiate market-specific claims, through to copywriting of a range of materials.

After receiving a list of key messages that the client wished to convey, our specialist medical writers set to work preparing local supporting reference packs. The writers conducted careful research to source relevant research papers and journals that could be referenced in the 10 local markets. 

Using the newly gathered reference packs, our writers developed local claims, all meticulously referenced and rigorously checked by a second native medical linguist.

Following client approval of these claims, our writers began work on the final step: copywriting a range of marketing materials, including brochures and leaflets, while carefully weaving in the approved claims and references.

In 2019, Mother Tongue began collaboration with a prominent global biotechnology company to localize promotional campaigns and patient guides to treatment therapies. The company studies genetic conditions and develops leading drugs to treat these conditions. Alongside an agency partner, Mother Tongue stepped in to authentically translate critical company and drug information for global audiences with the goal of connecting patients with treatments.  

Over time, the scope of work expanded to more assets, from product information brochures to website copy. The company focuses on four priority markets in Europe by leveraging Mother Tongue’s curated team of 15 designated medical translators and style writers. 

The collaboration has developed a particular focus on audio-visual translation. One of the company’s marketing campaigns includes real testimonials of patients who have benefitted from their treatment therapies, providing stories of lived experience with genetic conditions. Mother Tongue create and translate timecoded subtitles to expand the reach and impact of these essential testimonials.

Industry-Leading Global Biotechnology Advancement Requires Cutting-Edge Language Services

Strong, resonant and accurate translation of medical materials requires acute expertise in the subject matter and awareness of the target audience. This is especially the case in a collaboration between Mother Tongue and a leading specialized pharmaceutical company, a partnership launched in 2023 that continues to grow today.  

The pharmaceutical company specializes in drugs that target rare conditions such as hyperphagia and Bardet-Biedl syndrome. Part of the company’s mission is also to spread awareness and understanding of these conditions, as the general public often lacks knowledge of them, leading to delayed diagnoses. 

To that effect, Mother Tongue and our specialist medical writers have helped with the localization of content targeting both HCPs and patients, including app and website content, awareness campaigns, informed consent forms, posters, brochures and leave pieces. Additionally, beyond text translation, we have supported translation of training materials and instructional videos through our subtitling and voiceover services.  

In a testament to our ongoing exploration of new technologies in multilingual adaptation, we also notably leveraged synthetic voiceover to accomplish localization of a patient instructional video.  

As always, we began by analyzing the source script to identify context, tone and purpose, as well as to determine cultural nuance, expressions or region-specific content.  

From there, one of our medical translators with expertise in the subject matter translated the script. We then worked with a partner agency’s production studio to select an appropriate synthetic voice in accordance with the company’s desired tone.  

After feeding the localized script into the synthetic VO software, Mother Tongue then facilitated a meeting with the medical translator and the agency to analyze the VO output and adjust parameters such as pitch, speed and intonation to achieve a natural and clear delivery.  

The final result was an accurate, engaging and culturally appropriate instructional video that not only fit the client’s brief but will undoubtedly assist patients everywhere in the use of these essential products.

Since 2021, Mother Tongue has been collaborating with a leading healthcare brand specializing in women’s health.

As part of the initial onboarding stage, we selected a dedicated network of medical writers to transcreate and localize content for a range of products and devices offered by the brand. This includes brochures, surveys, website copy and training videos, with terminology and tone of voice tailored for the target audience, which ranges from HCPs to patients.

In 2023-2024, we supported the brand during the launch of a new maternity care product. For this large-scale campaign, we transcreated brochures, surveys, guides and training modules for the launch in 5 core markets, as well as providing translation of regulatory materials and audiovisual services.

Over the years, the partnership has continued to grow, and today we offer the brand flexible support for over 20 markets. With the help of over 40 medical writers, work is completed across our three global hubs, providing 24-hour support throughout the working week.

Our collaboration with this leading European pharma company began in autumn 2024, when Mother Tongue’s dedicated Life Sciences division translated and proofread multiple sclerosis drug training modules and objection handling guidance for sales representatives in 5 EMEA languages.  

Prior to starting the project, Mother Tongue’s Life Sciences project managers carefully selected the medical writers with previous translation experience in the neurodegenerative field who would best fit the requirements of the task. Tailoring the materials to the target audience, our specialized writers then focused on preparing translated materials that would not only adhere to the client’s tone of voice but would also convey the scientific messaging to sales representatives in a clear and understandable way. 

The project timeline presented a challenge as well, as the client had a tight deadline for the localized materials to be ready and the source content would only be available in batches. To meet the client’s needs, 3 medical writers per language worked simultaneously, with one QA expert per language reviewing all content to maintain consistency. In doing so, we were able to avoid bottlenecks and delivered all ~300,000 translated words within the timeline. 

As part of the scope Mother Tongue also performed a monolingual review of several English modules, prior to translating them. During the review, our medical proofreader was able to prevent inconsistencies in the source and made necessary stylistic revisions, thus improving flow and readability while ensuring that language, grammar and spelling were appropriate for the intended clinical setting. 

What began as a one-off project, although large in volume, has now flourished into regular collaboration that continues to grow, covering both translation and proofreading.

Mother Tongue partners with brand agency to cast voiceover talent and record video scripts for automotive brand

At the start of 2024, Mother Tongue started collaborating with 3 brand agencies based in Asia to cast VO talent and record tens of video scripts for a global automotive brand sponsoring a major sporting event.

Given the number of stakeholders involved and the high profile of the project, the client requested to select the voiceover candidates we would put forward. To give them as much choice as possible, we submitted 55 demos, which were recorded from scratch by our voiceover artists who fit the client brief closely.

The client then picked 2 artists for each of the 9 EMEA and LATAM markets to voice 6 video scripts of different lengths, which were recorded over the course of two weeks in our studio in London.

14 Mother Tongue language supervisors also joined the sessions to assist the talent with TOV and pronunciation and ensure smooth communication between the artists and the client, as they were also present at every recording session.

The quality of the final recorded scripts was a testament to our rigorous project management, with our Singapore and London teams simultaneously liaising with the client, partner agencies, recording studio, voiceover talent and language supervisors in multiple time zones.

Since 2020, Mother Tongue has been the powerhouse behind product translation for a global, Gen Z fashion brand, who launch more than 4,000 new products every single week to consumers worldwide. 

Our task is to get these products to market in a minimum amount of time, through high-speed localization that consistently captures the brand’s fresh, youthful, and confident tone of voice.

Alongside product content, Mother Tongue supports the brand with the transcreation of various marketing materials, including newsletters, banners and push notifications. One key player in the accounting software space launched a collaboration with Mother Tongue to ensure all the agility and ease of their platform wasn’t diminished by a lack of linguistic resonance. 

Of course, expertise in accounting terminology is essential, which is why Mother Tongue began by building a team of experienced financial linguists and accounting subject matter experts (SMEs). We also built a client-approved glossary to ensure all terminology would remain consistent and began leveraging translation memory from the beginning. 

Our collaboration began with website and marketing transcreation, with a notable overhaul of the French and German websites, translation of several dozen customer success stories, and audio-visual translation of training and promotional videos. 

Seeing positive results, the software development team soon joined the workflow, and Mother Tongue began linguistic quality assurance on UI/UX strings for the accounting software itself. The strings are translated by another vendor, so Mother Tongue’s team of SMEs act as a final approver to ensure the product meets utmost quality and accuracy.

In order to deliver market research to a prominent social media platform, an agency partner crafted an in-depth survey asking app users to articulate how different kinds of marketing messages resonated with them. 

With a deployment across 3 global markets targeting Gen Z users and their parents, nuance in language was key to help furnish the platform with insight and discovery to more deeply connect with their users. 

Through a robust and months-long collaboration, the agency and Mother Tongue set out to get answers by asking questions in users’ native languages. 

The heart of the survey were key “statements”, and respondents had to rank how deeply those statements resonated with them as users.

As experts in language and culture, Mother Tongue stepped in with a multifaceted approach, to: 

Transcreate the English survey and key statements into French, Spanish and Japanese 

Perform, at the conclusion of the survey, a cultural consultation to interpret the survey results and weigh in on regional, linguistic and cultural nuance that drove those results.

Of course, writers had to consider local customs and generational differences in language as they sought to adapt a survey that would yield useful data, employing transcreation to capture the essence of each question. 

Over the course of the survey, 3,200 teen users and 800 parents provided insights. After the survey was completed and the analysis performed, we were happy to hear that our agency partner was pleased with the results, confirming that our findings were exactly what they had hoped to present to the end-client. 

For our team, it was a great opportunity to combine multiple offerings in order to deliver a bespoke solution. Much like answering questions in a survey, when we take the time to fully understand and consider a brief, we always deliver thoughtful insight.

In 2019, Mother Tongue joined forces with an agency partner to provide voiceover recordings for a prominent music streaming service. An ambitious campaign promoting premium subscriptions targeted 44 markets and comprised over a dozen scripts and CTAs. To meet the brief, we leveraged the talent of 88 voiceover artists, tapped into 24-hour project management support across our 3 offices, and refined our processes for casting, booking and executing session recordings. 

With this large-scale project in full swing, the Covid-19 pandemic struck, which introduced unprecedented global upheaval, office and studio closures, and the need to further adapt and simplify our workflows. 

Mother Tongue rose to the occasion, and the end-client was so pleased that we were soon called upon to execute a separate and timely campaign. Centered around essential steps to prevent the spread of coronavirus, the campaign reached 17 markets and presented clear and concise public health messaging.

The three campaigns, which ran at different times between 2022 and 2023, covered different channels, from OLV subtitles to in-app content and print assets. Our in-market strategists advised on the likelihood of the core concepts to be understood by the client's young target audience. Mother Tongue’s QA specialists provided feedback on more than 900 written tests from the client’s 6 recruitment agencies, who then used our assessment scores to decide whether they would proceed with the hiring process.

To achieve this, we liaised with the client in creating a score grid that would cater to both grammar and language use, assessing spelling, punctuation, style and tone of voice.

We also partnered closely with the 6 recruitment agencies and facilitated a bespoke cloud environment to process the written tests, providing a 1 working-day assessment turnaround while complying with GDPR requirements.

We carry out pro bono work for a global children’s charity, which delivers projects that improve educational opportunities for children disadvantaged by circumstances such as conflict, climate crises and other emergencies. Services we provide for the charity include transcription, transcreation, interpreting and voiceover (VO).

One of their initiatives is a Global Youth Ambassadors scheme, which amplifies the voices of young people aged 18-30 and provides training and resources to help them campaign for the right to education worldwide. The ambassadors usually meet remotely via Zoom, a few times per month. We provide an American Sign Language interpreter for one of these participants, enabling them to participate fully in the initiative.

Delegates are from all over the world, but discussions are led in English, which for many is their second, or even third language. Our dedicated talent team recruited and onboarded an interpreter with extensive experience working with clients from around the world, including in the education sphere specifically, to ensure easy communication.
